About this pier
Seal Beach Pier has served the city of Seal Beach, Orange County, since the early 1900s, making it one of the older pleasure piers on the Southern California coast. The wooden structure has been rebuilt multiple times after storm damage — including a January 1983 storm that washed away a long section of the pier — and a May 2016 fire that destroyed the vacant Ruby's Diner building at the pier's end, yet it retains its historic wooden-pier character rather than being replaced with a concrete structure like many of its neighbors. Sitting just south of the San Gabriel River mouth, with Anaheim Bay farther southeast, it mixes nearby river-mouth influence with typical ocean surf conditions.

Seal Beach Pier lies within CDFW's Southern Management Area, spanning from Point Conception to the Mexico border. The nearby river mouth brings a nice variety to the catch: surfperch and croaker work the sandy surf on either side of the pier, corbina cruise close to shore on calm days, and mackerel and occasional halibut show up near the pier's end. Bat rays and guitarfish are common bottom bites, particularly near the river mouth's deeper channel.
License and regulations
No California sport fishing license is needed to fish from Seal Beach Pier, since public piers are exempt under state law. Size limits, bag limits, and seasonal closures for individual species remain fully enforced no matter your license status. The state's two-rod limit for public pier anglers applies here as well. Tips for fishing here
Fishing near the river mouth side of the pier often produces better results for corbina and croaker, especially with sand crab or mussel bait fished on a light leader. The pier's end is the better bet for mackerel using a Sabiki rig, and a sliding-sinker rig with cut bait on the bottom can turn up halibut or rays. Weekday mornings tend to be far less crowded than weekends, when the pier and Main Street area fill up with visitors and shoppers. Watching the tide and current near the river mouth can help you decide which side of the pier is likely to fish better on a given day.
